Spring into March

Spring-Into-March-Offer-Afternoon-Tea-Hamper-Penventon-Park-Hotel-Corwall

It feels like spring has arrived early in Cornwall after the announcement of the blooming of six chosen magnolias in Cornwall’s greatest gardens. It may be only February, but already the amount of sunlight we get each day is getting longer, the daffodils are taking over and the blue skies are certainly making a show stopping appearance. You may connect Cornwall with the summer days, but we can’t help but love our county during the spring when the beaches are quieter, yet just as beautiful, and the roads are lined with colourful wild flowers.

Pack your blanket, we’re going on a picnic! Just a ten minute drive away from the Penventon Park Hotel you’ll find some of Cornwall’s most loved beaches and views. One of our favourite things to do is relax by the coast and take in the spectacular views over some delicious treats. Here’s our top coastal picnic spots within a short drive away from the Penventon Park Hotel.

North Cliffs – Portreath to Godrevy

The coast between Portreath and Godrevy is known as the North Cliffs and offers some of the most exhilarating views in Cornwall. The North Cliffs are enriched in history of pirates and fisherman and sometimes when the tide is out you can glimpse the wreckages of unfortunate events. Just the names of the coves can give you an idea of the events that have taken place in the past.

There are a number of incredible coves and cliff spots along the North Cliffs to choose from including Bassets Cove, Hells Mouth and Deadman’s Cove. We suggest parking in one of the car parks found on the stretch of coast and walking along the South West coast path for the best views across the Atlantic Ocean. In spring, the cliffs are covered in wild flowers and nesting sea birds, and if you’re lucky you may even spot a pod of dolphins.
For the extra adventurous, why not try the walk from Hell’s Mouth to Godrevy and venture off road through fields and Knavocks to find some of Cornwall’s hidden gems.

Godrevy, Cornwall

Just a fifteen minute drive from the Penventon Park Hotel you’ll find Godrevy, a National Trust treasure. With views over to St Ives, Godrevy is home to a large sandy beach, dramatic coves and amazing nature.

Whether you fancy giving surfing a go, building sand castles on the beach or indulging in a cliff top picnic, Godrevy has something to offer everyone. We suggest walking along the coast path towards the lighthouse and explore the hidden coves – don’t forget to keep an eye out for the seal colony that can be spotted throughout the year on Mutton Cover, just around the corner from the lighthouse point, or if you’re lucky you may catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in their natural habitat.

Gwithian, Cornwall

Back by dunes and wild grass, Gwithian beach will always be a favourite and offers plenty of excellent opportunities for walking and exploring. With miles of sand, Gwithian beach has enough rock pools and caves for the little ones to explore. Either find a spot in the dunes to sit back, relax with views to Godrevy lighthouse and St Ives or venture down onto the beach itself.

At low tide, the beach extends to Godrevy, meaning that you can walk the width of the beach and experience two beaches in one. When the conditions are right, there will normally be a vast amount of surfers and windsurfers to watch in the distance.

Dogs are allowed on the beach outside of the peak season (May-October).
